Attractions and Activities
There
are many attractions and activities in around the Old
Vicarage Country Guest House Mid Wales. Llangurig
at 1000ft above sea level is reputed to be the highest
village in Wales. It is the first village on the River
Wye which rises, with the Severn, in the Plynlimon
hills some six miles away. There is a popular walk
to the source of both rivers and the view from the
top of Plynlimon (2465ft) is outstanding.

Llangurig
is in the exact centre of Wales, being equidistant
from Cardiff and Llandudno and only 25 miles from the
coast. It is an ideal base from which to explore Central
Wales or even further afield as one hour by car, in
either direction, brings the visitor to the Brecon
or Snowdonia National Parks.
Mid
Wales is one of the last unspoilt areas in Britain,
justly famed for its beauty and diversity - a country
of rugged moorland, ancient woods, mountain streams,
hidden waterfalls and the romantic charm of the famous
Lakeland areas.
Self
Guided Walks
Using our maps and written directions, enjoy walking
off the beaten track in Mid Wales.
Away from stress, crowds and traffic. Walk the forgotten
footpaths and bridleways, enjoy wide open spaces with
outstanding views, a wildlife and bird watchers paradise,
home of the Red Kite, Buzzard Goss Hawk, etc.
All walks start and end at The Old Vicarage and vary
in length from gentle half day to strenuous full day
walking.

We
do not suffer from the visitor pressure which afflicts
other scenic areas, allowing walks on uncrowded paths
to forgotten valleys and little frequented mountain
pools or along historic tracks of monks and drovers
in the heart of the Welsh hills. Sheep farms dominate
the landscape and the pace of life is unhurried.
Mid
Wales is also famous for its wildlife; being the home
of the rare Red Kite and other birds of prey. Kites
and Buzzards frequently fly over the Old Vicarage.
The Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire Wildlife Trusts
and RSPB manage numerous sites which are all open to
the general public, and in the Elan Valley (the Lakeland
of Wales), we are fortunate in having a water authority
sympathetic to nature conversation.
For
the visitor to tour around by car there are numerous
landmarks to see and explore. Powis and Harlech castles,
the narrow gauge railways of Mid Wales, the Centre
for Alternative Technology, Devils Bridge, Llywernog
Silver lead mine and the wild coast line of Cardigan
Bay with its broad estuaries. No other part of the
UK has such diversity within its area.
