The Old Vicarage is an ideal base for enjoying a whole variety of outdoor pursuits throughout the Cambrian Mountains and across Powys and Mid-Wales. Here is a summary of some of the most popular, but if you need more information or want to check up on anything else, please contact us.
Birdwatching
Mid-Wales, and Powys in particular, is home to the hugely successful re-introduction of red kites. We regularly see these over The Old Vicarage and the surrounding countryside. But there is a huge variety of birdlife locally and further afield. Our gardens welcome a host of different birds including pheasant, woodpecker, tawny owl, thrush, common garden birds...and the occasional sparrowhawk. The river offers heron and kingfisher, and the uplands even more. There are feeding centres for red kites at Rhayader and en route to Aberystwyth.
Angling
The local rivers, lakes and reservoirs provide excellent opportunites for anglers, with some outstanding fisheries on the River Wye, the Elan reservoirs and Llyn Clywedog. All of these are within easy reach.
There are two beats on the Wye in Llangurig, which are managed by the Wye and Usk Foundation through their Fishing Passport scheme.
Llyn Clywedog - a 615 acre reservoir - offers excellent trout fishing, managed through the Llanidloes and District Angling Association. Small boats are available for hire and permits are available for different time periods.
Shooting
Opportunities for target shooting, rough shooting and training are available at the Sweet Lamb complex just outside the village. We work closely with Orion Firearms Training, who are based in Llanidloes, to welcome guests who want to improve their skills.
